I download blu ray/hd movies and encode to play on my playstation 3. The ones i download that come in .mkv i convert and split with gotsent which does all of it for me. The ones i download that are already in .mp4(MPEG-2 Transport Stream) format are generally over 10gb. This is where i run into a problem, the PS3's hard drive is FAT32 so it wont play files over 4gb in size. So i downloaded a few different video cutters and none of them would work at all then i finally got this one called Transport Stream Splitter. It split the video files for me in the appropriate sizes like i wanted and they played on the computer fine in VLC. I go to play them on my PS3 and it says unsupported data type.
From what ive read its not working because the key frame isnt there from the split. So i basically need help with making this file playable or a new program that can split it without breaking it. Im well aware of being able to stream the video files over the network through a file server but i like to actually be able to fast forward and take my PS3 places and have the files on the HD so i dont need any suggestions to do that.
I then tried Xilisoft HD Video Encoder and even on the highest quality settings it manages to ruin the movie quality so this was a no go, so basically i need some way to edit this file to fix it without having to rencode and ruin the quality of the files.

you can try avidemux,
video=>copy
audio=>copy
format=>mp4
use the mark in/ mark out to mark the segments, press save with extension (e.g. "myfile.mp4")
you probably don't have to do this, but for large files you may have to set tools=>preferences=>output tab=>checkmark create openDML files -

Aside from that i cant get the files open in a any cutting or muxing programs the only way ive been able to do anything with it is with Xilosoft HD Converter which ruined the quality. I tried uping the bitrate but im not quite sure what bitrate it should be at for blu ray movies, i did manage to get a few of them to look good but then other movies are playing with lag like the bitrate wasnt high enough so im still in the process of messing with it. -
It sounds like you have been re-encoding it, so you will lose quality if you do that. Ideally you want to split it without re-encoding
Try putting it inside of a .mkv, split it, then put it back into .mp4 if you want\
You can use mkvmergegui, and split it (under the global tab)
Also mediainfo (view=>text) may provide more information. Gspot is not very good for these file types -

Hopefully you can make some sense out of this and help me get this straightened out. -
Did you try mkvmerge?
The video is h264, it should work
If not, try changing the extension manually to .m2ts (you have to enable viewing extensions in windows)
Can you extract the raw h264 and AC3 streams in YAMB? If so, you should be able to import those into tsmuxer and/or mkvmerge and use those to split it -
I opened it with mkvmerge and ran it to change it to a MKV and it went through then when i tried opening the file the screen is just gray with some mixed colors at the top and it crashes VLC player.
Also i tried under YAMB to extract streams and it wont open the files properly, im really not sure what these people did to these files that they wont open in anything and since the rapidshare bandwidth change i cant afford to re download all of these. -
Is your VLC player version up to date? What about trying other media players to playback the .mkv?
Did you set the fps correctly in mkvmerge?
Since the mkvmerge appeared to work, use mkvextract to extract the raw streams, then import those into tsmuxer. You should be able to make a new .m2ts or .ts, and split it if you want. -
mkvextract doesnt work either, i had to rename the .mp4 files just to get them to show up on it then when i opened it gives me an error saying it cant extract that type of file.
-
Did you use mkvextract on the .mkv file (not the original .mp4) ?
Are you using the most current software versions?
It might be a Vista issue.
Sorry I have no more ideas how to do this task "nicely"; you might have to re-encode. Just use more bitrate if you want better quality -
What bitrate would you suggest for blu ray to keep as close to 100% quality as possible and do you think the one movie i encoded that lagged some was because of too low of a bitrate?
Also i extracted the MKV as well and the file that came out was somehow only 100some MB when the original file is almost 5gb and it did the gray screen with green blurred colors at the top. -
Just use CRF mode, e.g. CRF18, lower is better quality, bigger filesize. This is faster than using 2pass bitrate. If you wanted to use 2pass bitrate, use something higher than you have already (given in mediainfo)
If it lagged before, it might be too high of a bitrate (not too low) for your pc. You might consider using your graphics card or DXVA to assist decode
Just a thought: the addition of AC3 audio to .mp4 container specification is pretty new (just added AUG 2008), so certain versions of mp4box and certain software might have difficulty with this format (mediainfo gave your file as h264/ac3 in .mp4). I know Kurtnoise is working on a new mp4box over @ Doom9, so you might have to wait a while until it is updated
In the meantime, you maybe able to extract with ffmpeg using command line, but I'm not too command line saavy
Good luck -
I will match the bit rates from media info with the encoding and hopefully it works well, the converter im using doesnt have the option you mentioned. Thanks for all the help.
