I am currently going through a nightmare trying to reinstall Vista. As of right now, I have attempted to reinstall it no less than fifteen separate times, and it keeps getting locked up during the first configuration process. So I am looking at having to accelerate my plans to create a function Linux HTPC setup.

I am looking for Linux equivalents to:

    VideoReDo Plus
    TMPGEnc XPress 4.x
    TMPG DVD Author

I cannot find reliable information about whether they work in WINE or not, plus I would like to try a native Linux solution.

I was using MythBuntu 8.10, but I was forced to delete that partition because I thought that that was part of the problem, but sadly I discovered that it was not. I will be reinstalling it immediately, and if the Vista install craps out again, Mythbuntu will very soon be living in a very spacious 465GB mansion.

You could always install virtualbox or vmware and run Vista (or XP or win98, etc.) as a virtual machine in linux and run those programs. IF Vista is dying because of a hardware issue, the virtual machine would probably let you load it.

I had thought about that, but unfortunately, that would require a working Vista installation, which sadly, I still don't have.

I'm thinking this is probably an issue either with the BIOS config or with the MB, in that it doesn't like Vista--which is really screwy as it makes such a big deal of claiming it's Vista-Ready. Maybe it wants SP1 instead.

Either way, I'm just going to try and get things working in Mythbuntu and hopefully it'll be up and running by Monday when "Heroes" airs again.

    there's tons of tools, here's a few:

    http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

    http://www.biggmatt.com/winff/

    http://handbrake.fr/

    http://varsha.sourceforge.net/

    http://www.heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php

i will tell you this, if you are going the linux route and are planning on using it for video editing, you should go with a distribution that is focused on that as it's target audience:

    http://videolinux.net/news.php

    http://64studio.com/

    http://www.freespire.org/

    http://www.linspire.com/

    http://www.vectorlinux.com/

i have personally used all of the above and would recommend any one of them, there is also a red hat based distro specifically made for video editing but the name escapes me and i can't seem to find a link at the moment.

Thanx for the help. I finally got Vista to install properly, so now I'm in the process of making a virtual machine to use with VMWare Player in Mythbuntu. I'm also gonna take a look at the Linux-native tools you have listed.

I'm also gonna try working in Mythbuntu for one straight week without booting into Vista.

Why would you jump from Vista to Linux? Why not go back to XP?

You'll find Linux tools that can be used, yes --- but no, none of them will give the same experience as VideoReDo or TMPGEnc products.

As a linux user I must second lordsmurf's suggestion. Love my linux, but for video editing, the tools are sadly lacking. It's XP for video.

That's funny! I do all my Video editing on Linux. Ya it easier on XP but that doesn't mean it can't be done.
From capture to cutting to all aspects of dvd creation can be done on Linux.
The tools are their if everything is set up properly.

There isn't any. Linux is not Windows, nor should the two be thought of as equivalents. It's not Vistbuntu, well depends on who you ask

Want something simple to edit videos?
    Avidemux
    DVBCut
    GOPChop

    Encode videos?
    FFMPEG
    Mencoder
    MJPEGTools
    Transcode
^^ Or any of the many GUI's for those CLI apps
    AviDemux

    Author DVDs?
Any of the GUI's for DVDAuthor such as
    DVDStyler
    'Q' DVD-author
    KMedia Factory

    All in one app?
    DeVeDe
    ToVid
    KMedia Factory
Linux _is_ user-friendly. It is not ignorant-friendly and idiot-friendly.
