Is "Windows XP Essential Edition" a bootleg-only version of Windows?

I think so...It's xpp corporate with sp3, wmp11, net framework 2.0, ie7, etc, etc already added.

Apparently, there's a series of "alternative" XP operating system versions. I had heard of "XP Essential Edition" and the "XP Black Edition", but I've just found several more while doing a search.

I'm not interested; I get a feeling that they aren't all that they say they are.
Just me being routinely suspicious.

Actually, you can create the same discs legitimately by slipstreaming them. That way, you have XP with all the updates, for when you need to re-install (all from your purchased copy of XP, of course).

I actually tried one called "performance edition" because everyone was raving over how fast and wonderful it was.. It was fast and impressive, however, there was so much stripped from it, that I could not install my DLT successfully. I don't recommend these altered versions. I also couldn't even install my digital camera, so they're not all they're cracked up to be..

Some of these, like the TinyXP editions, were specifically directed at gamers, who were willing to toss a whole lot of (to them extraneous) functionality overboard, in order to get that "lean & mean" Win version. The description is even likely to advise not using it in a business or production environment -- and not just because of any legal issues.

nLite is supposed to enable you to remove just those things you regard as expendable, but I suspect that you probably need to have some idea of what you are doing -- technically -- in order to do this without making some critical mistakes that will come back to haunt you.
