Depends on the resolution, the source type and how fussy you are regarding quality.
Lower resolution video looks fine at a lower bitrate, higher resolutions need higher rates to keep quality.
Shakey handheld sources need a higher bitrate.

i want to keep the quality or at least not lose so much of it -
1-1/2 to 2 hrs per dvd, eg 4800 to 6500 kbps is good. Use a bitrate calculator, see the Tools section.
