I'm having a bit of trouble playing 1080p files on my computer. I have complete success with 720p, but 1080p skips on occasion. I think that my computer *SHOULD* be able to handle it. I have an nvidia 8800gt video card, and a intel core duo 2.00 GHz processor.

I'm beginning to think that maybe the processor isn't powerful enough to run 1080p smoothly, would it be in my best interest to upgrade it?

  2. What CPU usage do you see when playing 1080p? What player are you using?

That PC should be fast enough for playing HD content.
You should use a codec which can use the hardware playback (Purevideo) of your GT8800 card properly.
I personally use the Cyberlink/PowerDVD 8 ultra codec for HD playback.
With that powerdvd codec I even can play 1080P easily on my older P4 3,2 and GeForce 6610XL card

I've been using MPCHC. I tried going into the H.264/AVC (DXVA) settings and unchecking ffmpeg as I saw suggested in the thread that jagabo linked. It didn't change much but I think it's running slightly better. My cpu usage goes up to about 60% while playing the file.

Are there any other codecs in MPCHC that I should keep unchecked? I suppose I would invest in NVidia's purevideo as a last resort but I'd rather not have to spent the extra cash

  6. 60 percent indicates CPU decoding. DXVA would give you single digits. I seem to recall that some of the oldest 8800 cards didn't support DXVA. Did you verify the H264 decoder was set to 2 threads? Make sure you are using Overlay Mixer for output.

A 'option' could be to download a PowerDVD trial version 7 or 8 (ultra?).

If you are not using the PowerDVD player software itself then I believe you could continue to use the codecs after the trial ends.

  8. I think CoreAVC Pro is the fastest of the software h.264 decoders. It's not very expensive.
