tmpgenc, either express or the original, is a pretty good dvd encoder, so long as you max the settings, alternatively ffmpeg with one of the free gui's is pretty good, avidemux is also pretty good, there are actually quite a few encoders that will do what you want.

FAVC generally works and produces great results. If it chokes, extract and repack the mkv with just the video and audio and try again.

ConvertXtoDVD will convert pretty much any MKV faster than FAVC, but at an arguably lower quality.

Both will do it much faster than tmpgenc.

I USED Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate, it created a VOB file in five hours, I was able to play it by assigning that file to MPC, but when I created VIDEO_TS folder and put the file in it and then tried to open the folder using WinDVD it wouldn't play it, does that mean it wouldn't play in DVD players as well, do I have to rename the file to be playable because now it's named by the title of the movie?

Also before I started the conversion it said it would have 4.43GB so I set it to normal quality, but when it finished I got only 2.36GB, what's up with that? I guess now I have to waste another 5 hours but this time converting with highest quality...if it's over one-layered DVD I will use CloneDVD.

Personally, I wouldn't use Xilisoft for converting anything, but to each his own. FAVC would have done the same job in around 2 hours (properly), and ConvertXtoDVD a little faster again).

What should I select for best results?

I would use DC Prec of 9, push the maximum bitrate up to 8700, and use the Quality preset. Under CPU Cores choose HCEnc Built-in
