For a 4:3 video, what are the best settings to use in your experience? Everything I try, youtube turns to absolute crap. I really wish they weren't so popular as there's so many better sites now.

Have you tried add the &fmt=22 ?

here's youtube's suggestion.
We specifically recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better on YouTube.--

In the comments, someone said &fmt=18 and that worked, but the 22 didn't.. That high quality one is amazing on that page!!! I'll try 640x480 next time instead of 480x360; maybe that will make a difference..
