Hope this is the correct forum...
OK, I've got a Toshiba 1200 dvd player that will
play my 352 x 240 @ 2600 kbps and higher (x)vcd's.
The prob is, it won't play at 720 x 480 @ (any bit rate).
It tries to play at that res and gives picture and sound,
but can only properly sync the picture every few frames.
(seen by using frame by frame still mode). The result
is an unwatchable picture with about 80% noise and
artifacts.
I was wondering is if this means give up... your
player will never play @ 720 x 480 OR ...if there was
some way of coaxing this player into using 720 x 480
by enabling /disabling some feature or parameter
used in the encoding process. I make my own CD's
using TMPGnc.
Thanks for your time,

I've had good sucess using 480 x 480 XVCD
I use varible bitrate with the peak at 2500
I find this is a good comprimise and you don't have to worry about the 30 trial for MPEG2 running out.
If your player can play SVCD's it has to be able to playback 480 X 480

Well , perhaps I sould have said that my Toshiba DVD
player won't play SVCD. Any SVCD files I get I have
to convert the mpeg2 file to an mpeg1 file and then
create the (x)vcd from that.
Its when I am encoding the mpeg1 file that I have a
number of options as to resolution ,bitrate, ect... I am
quite new at this and was was hoping someone might
know of a way to coax the player into reading 720 x 480...
If in fact that was possible.
BTW
I actually thought 480 x 480 was (x )svcd not (x)vcd.
I have not tried that resolutin with mpeg1 files yet. -
480 X 480 is the standard SVCD (MPEG 2)resolution, but I am encoding MPEG 1 so it is a XVCD at non standard resolution. My capture card can cap and my player can play 702X480 but the file size will be too big. You would only get avout 30 minutes or less on a 750 Meg CD. Using 480 X 480 varible bit rate I can fit 46 minutes on one CD with what I think is much better quality then Standard VCD.
My player can play SVCD but it takes longe to encode and TMPGnc only alowes you to use MPEG2 for 30 days and I did not want to get into registry hacks to get around this. So I thing that 480 x480 var bitrate MPEG1 is a very good comprimise. Give it a try to see if your player can handle it.

I actually use TMPGEnc (Version 2.51.33.127 if that makes
any diff) and I've never seen any notice of time limited use in
the readme or licence... <shrug>
The only resolution my DVD player seems to like is 352 x240,
All others either won't give an image or the image is out of sync
with +++ artifacts ... ie:won't play
(480 x480 shows as horribly out of sync btw, at any bitrate)
I was wondering if any one knew of multiplex/demultiplex or
interlace field settings which may coax this player into working
at other resolutions.
