Just out of curiousity these aren't drm'd wmv's are they? Could the licenses have expired?

If these are run of the mill wmv's than you should try vlc and mediaplayerclassic.

Duh. I didn't think to play it with VLC. Thanks it worked. No luck with media player classic however. I don't like VLC too much because when I fast forward it takes a a few seconds to unpixilate. Thanks for the advice anyways. I don't know which version of windows media player I'm using. I still get a pop up one in awhile that says would you like to upgrade media player and i keep on saying no thanks. I don't think the videos i'm looking at are DRM'd.

    Thx all for the advice,

    VC

PS. If anyone has idea why media player won't play these wmv's or how to determine which version of media player I'm using, I'm still open for suggestions.

To determine the version of Media Player you have, go to Help > About... (should probably say "About Windows Media Player," or something like that, but I'm not sure it's the same across all versions. ) It should mention what version it is in the information that pops up.

You'd think Media Player would automatically download any necessary support for a WMV file, though. You haven't installed any codecs/codec packs that might conceivably interfere with Media Player/DirectShow playback, have you?

I have WMP 10 and have installed no codec packs. I think your onto something regarding a codec that may be conflicting with WMP 10.
