When I edit my home DV movies, I have been using Motion DV from Panasonic to capture and edit, then TMPGEnc, then GUI for DVD to author, etc.

I have used Virtualdub often when I was converting VHS to DVD.

Today, a section of a captured AVI file was too dark. I used to VD to increase the light, using the Panasonic Codec to compress in VD. This causes a problem if I want to load that section and Motion DV closes. Any other one that I can consider??

I would try WinDV to do the FireWire transfer, then the Cedocida DV Codec and frameserve the VirtualDub output directly to TMPGEnc to avoid creating a in-between file. The Cedocida DV Codec works a lot better for me than the Panasonic.
