    Hey all:

I have been trying to convert wmv files at 640 x 480 into divx encoded avis. I've been using WinAvi and TEMPGEnc alternatively but both will take a 300-400 mb wmv and turn it into a 900+ mb avi. Is there anyway to reduce the file size or only through reducing the aspect ratio? I am running WinXP SP3. Thanks.

    Here is the conversion section.

THe main factor in determining file size is the video BITRATE. You need to lower the bitrate to make a smaller file size.

    this should help out

Reduce the video and audio bitrate or lower the video quality settings to get smaller file size. You can use a bitrate calculator if your tools can't calculate for you, see out tools list.

File size has nothing to do with resolution. It depends on the bit rate. Lower the bit rate, lower the encoded file size. I have never used WinAVI, but it may be one of those tools that is so simple to use that it lacks user configurable parts (like the Divx Converter program) or you are simply isolated from that option and it's hard to find. Free tools that are much more user configurable (you can set file size or bit rate easily) are AutoGK and Dr. Divx.

Thanks. That seems like what I need to do however I now have a follow up question. When I go into TMPGenc Xpress 4 and select my clip, .avi output, and the DIVX codec no where in there does it allow me to change the video bitrate. Am I simply missing a checkbox or something? Thank You.

Under the "Format" tab do you see a Rate control mode and a settings button next to it? Click on it then and you should be able to adjust bitrate.

No Baldrick, I don't see that. What I have under FORMAT is Add on the left with AVI underneath it. In the main part I have File Output Mode on top, Format in the middle with no options to change anything, and underneath that I have three tabs: Video where I can select codec and resolution, Audio where I can select codec and audio bitrate, and Other which seems to be just a place for me to enter extra info. On the right I have two boxes one for Output Stream Type and one for Interleave settings. If you have any further thoughts let me know. Thanks.

  8. Input your video clip into TMPGEnc.4.0.XPress. See screenshot

Ahh thanks all. Especially jimdagys the pic really helped. I had been going with the .avi not the divx one. I can now report a successful and thankfully much smaller file than the 900 mb monsters I was getting due to being able to fiddle with the video bit rate. And it still outputs to a .avi file which is nice. Its pretty slow but I assume that is due to having to alter the bitrate? In any event thanks again.
