Hi,
I am a newbie and after some advice on the best approach to capture and storage of MiniDV to HDD, to facilitate faster editing and creation of home movies and as a backup should the tapes fail.
After review of these forums I have downloaded WinDV and have run a few trials, using DV AVI Type 1 as the storage format.
I would like advice on any pitfalls with this in respect to quality of video and audio, and any ramifications for subsequent editing and production of home movies for DVD and streaming via Media Center and AppleTV.
What are the pros/cons of DV AVI Type 1 vs DV AVI Type 2?
HDD capacity is not an issue so I am not overly concerned about this aspect.
Many thanx

The DV date arriving at the firewire port contains both audio and video multiplexed together. A type 1 DV AVI saves this as a single stream within the AVI, marked as video. A type 2 DV AVI extracts a copy of the audio and saves it as an audio stream within the file, along with the raw data marked as a video stream. There is no quality difference in the audio or video. The only thing to be concerned about is the whether your downstream software accepts or requires type 1 or type 2.
