Just found out that TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 was just released. There is a trial version available. Haven't tried it yet. It is still downloading as I type this.

Only MPEG-2 output for BD-authoring? LAME....

  6. Lame is an understatement. That will have to get changed on their first update. Otherwise, the program looks and operates just like their DVD author er just that now it does Blu Ray.

  7. Their performance claims on the features page aren't exactly helpful. They only say that its 3x faster than their old authoring software but here's the specs on what they tested.

    Source Video Info:
DVD compliant MPEG files (MPEG-2 + Dolby Digital)
7 video files total (160 minutes total, 4.17GB)

    Authoring Settings:
DVD-Video (NTSC) format, Smart Rendering prioritized (default track settings), no menu, no transcoding, not written to DVD media.

    Benchmark PC Specifications:
    CPU: Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    Memory: 2GB
Source Hard Drive: 160GB, 5400rpm (IDE)
Output Hard Drive: 80GB, 7200rpm (IDE)
Smart rendering, no editing, transcoding, no menus, no burning - then isn't that just muxing audio and video? How about a test on a project that makes use of all of the features available in this new product (or at least ones with equivalent features in their old authoring product).

You should send your complaints to SONY Corp.
    or
expect to pay $20,000+ for TMPGEnc Authoring Works if they include "real BD" authoring under S*ny's extortions rules (aka licencing).

They currently have a promotion where you can get a $20 Amazon.com gift card if you already own a competing product. Seems to work sort of like a mail in rebate. During March, you can also get their Premium Menu Template pack for free as well which they charge $29.95 for. May not be a bad deal for some people.

These offers are just for the full version though, and not the upgrade or user discount prices.

No support for AVCHD output and when I imported a 61 mnute M2TS file from a BDMV folder, only the first 12 mins were displayed. Took an age to encode even those few minutes.
