    DVD
    Multiple 1GB VOBs
Three EPs spread out on the VOB files

Used Avidemux to split the three EPs apart, in MKV, with XVID video.

Used Subrip to pull the subtitles out of the VOBs
Ran through the file defining characters etc.
Saved the output as an SRT file
Added that to the MKV container using MKVMerge (Making sure the SRT file and Video file have the same name i.e. video.srt / video.avi)
Played in VLC and I do not see the subtitles

    They are selected
VLC sees the subtitle stream as being present, but they do not show up

    Any ideas?

    Update***

So I used DVDSubEdit to pull the subtitles out of the VOB Domain
I then opened the SRT file in Notepad, and pulled out the subs I didnt need for the second and third EPs
Saved the SRT file, and stuck it in the MKV using MKVmerge.

When I play the video in VLC, the subs are there without fail. They show up in a somewhat transparent box though.
If I open the same file in Media Player Classic, the subtitles start playing, but then dissapear, and only come back now and then during the video playback.

Maybe I am missing some simple setting but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.

    Thanks
