I have IrFanView installed on my PC. It works great.

Is there a way to configure IrFanView so that the file extensions stay at the standard WINDOWS default file extensions? (and not the IrFanView file extensions)

    yes there is....
Open IrfanView, go to the "Options" menu, and choose "Set file associations".
In the resulting window, choose "Clear all"

    Good Luck

I've never seen Irfanview change file extensions. You can set Irfanview to be the default program to open certain file types but it will not automatically hijack your files like Nero and other programs do. If you accidentally set them at install you can follow the advice above to change them back.

I used to only have gif set to Irfanview but since I like to use it to view my picture files, I have it set to view all graphics files (no video files) except for PSD files or it messes Photoshop up.
