    DV avi? (That would be a .wav audio stream.) Divx or Xvid Avi? (That would be either mp3 or ac3 audio.) There are different ways of dealing with different encoding types. "Avi" still doesn't say much, as it is only a container to the video and audio streams. Open the avi file in GSpot (freeware in the Tools section) to see what type of video (dv, xvid, divx, or uncompressed RGB) and audio (wav, mp3, or ac3) are found inside the avi container.

    Use AviMUX GUI -- that's all it does.

    More complex editing, try AviDemux (no relation), or VirtualDub
