I want to open .sub and .srt subtitle files so I can read the dialogue. I tried opening them up with notepad but that doesn't work. I tried google already but can't find anything.

You should be able to read the dialogue in a srt file using notepad. If not then it's probably not a srt file. If you have sub/idx files it's image subtitles, you could convert those to text using subrip.

Not sure why I said it didn't work with srt, I just tried it and it works in notepad. Will try using that program for the .sub file and post the results in a bit, thanks.

Just tried the guide for subrip, I was typing all the letters in manually. Then I just kept hitting ok and it was doing it automatically. Think I got it to work though, thanks.
