Western Digital HDMI USB Media Player?? (WDAVN00BN)

Just a quick ?, Are we able to hook a USB hub to the unit and plug in hard drives to the hub? I have purchased 1 of these unit and hasn't come in yet. I'd thought to ask to see if anyone has tried it. thanks

I just installed the new firmware, and I have good news and bad news. The WD HDTV now plays my Divx videos, something it wouldn't do before. But, when I was playing a .mov video, I tried fast-forwarding it. When I resumed play, the video was extremely choppy and generally unwatchable. I don't know if this was just a bad file, or what.

Also, I was not happy to see that when I powered the WD HDTV off, my USB drive remained powered. I hope they fix this with the next firmware release.

Overall, however, fixing the Divx issue makes this a good upgrade.

I've seen the same .mov issue with some .mp4 files. It seems to depend on where I hit play when fast forwarding. ff and play again may or may not return to proper play, it dpends again where it is in the file when I hit play.

I've seen a few posts that say this player will play VOBs but if I try to play a VOB, it renders the player unusable. No files on the drive will play after I try and play a VOB and I have to reset the player to factory settings and fiddle with both the player and the external drive to get it to read the drive and play my files again.

Has anyone else been able to play VOBs? I also saw mention of playing ISO files in this thread. Can anyone else confirm this?

I play .vobs with one. They play better with the firmware update.

My last problem with vobs happens on some music video discs I made. I need to cut them so that each video is seperate and I don't have to fast forward through them.

MY quick guess not having tryd is that it won't work. I'd bet that the unit can only handle 2 hard drives. NTFS support is nice so that I don't have to break things down under 4Gb now.

GREAT NEWS! I plugged in a powered USB hub and plugged 2 drives in the hub and the unit saw both of them, depending on what usb port you put them on is where they listed the drives. For instance i plugged the hub on the side (Port 1 on the unit) and went to Video->Folders-> and picked USB 1 and there lied the 2 drives, I pick 1 just to see if it would work and it went in and listed my movies i stored on it, pressed play and it started the movie. YAY! I love this device. Now to try it with more than 2 drives... Just shared my finding to everyone who owns the unit.

I'm currently using WDAVN00BN version of WDTV, which is running firmware version: 1.00.01. The one that it came with.

Now, I just noticed that a new firmware has been released for this product on WD's website. I've since downloaded it, put in a hdd following the instructions provided. Now, after connecting the hdd with my tv, I can't seem to find the 'Firmware Upgrade' option in the settings tab. As it's being depicted on WD's website. The only relevant option that I can find is 'System Settings' but that too doesn't feature anything pertaining to a firmware upgrade.

Can you folks help me with this issue?

I have no audio receiver so I will be using the HDMI for picture and the red / white RCA's for audio running straight in my TV's RCA inputs.

My question is will this be ok? I've read a few comments about people having problems with lack of sound on some MKV's?

I just played a 1.09 GB file from(http://www.eztv.it/frontpage.php) in MKV, and using only an HDMI cable the file played perfect audio. I don't think you need the red & white cables at all. HDMI sends both the audio and video.

Try using a flash drive that has nothing but the firmware package on it. Large hard drives with the firmware upgrade are not recognized, which ironically is fixed in the very latest firmware.

You need to put the wdtv.bin and wdtv.ver files in the root folder of a USB drive. If you put the WDTV_FW_1_01_01 folder in root folder, it can't see the files.

That's what the instructions say to do and it worked for me.

To update the firmware:

1. Go to http://support.wdc.com and download the latest firmware update compressed file for your Media Player.
2. Click "Downloads" then the product name (or photo).
3. Extract the two files (.BIN and .VER files) to the root folder of a portable USB drive.
4. Connect the USB drive to the HD media player's USB port.
5. Press HOME, and then select the Settings bar.
6. Select the firmware upgrade icon, and then press ENTER.
7. You are prompted to perform the firmware upgrade.
8. Select OK on the firmware update prompt, and then press ENTER. This will restart the system.
9. After restarting, the system automatically enters firmware upgrade mode.
10. Once the update process is completed, the HD media player will restart again.
11. Once the HD media player restarts, the new firmware is automatically loaded.

Try turning "ON" the Media Library, under Setting/System/Media Library -> ON Then plug in your drive with the firmware in the root directory. This will scan your media and can give you the option of upgrading it.

Anyone able to view subs? I've tried both Vobs and .divx with subs and neither can see them. The manual says it can play .srt subs if they have the same name as the avi and are in the same folder but says nothing about playing subs in VOBs or MPEGs.

guys i may have found a way to tag mp4's properly, ill give more info when i find a faster way of doing it and being able to add AC3/DTS to mp4's. Have a look below

It got delivered today at work, picked up an 8gb usb stick on the way home which I reformatted to NTFS, loaded up an 720p rip of B**k To The F*t*r* and an HD TV episode of K*ight R*der 2008 all I can say is wow....exactly the solution I wanted, cannot believe how clear the picture is, highly recommended.

Do the MKV files have DTS in the title?

If so, that will be why. Either acquire the non DTS rip or change the audio format on the existing rip.

Well i thought i would like to share what i have found on the MP4 factor of adding cover arts to mp4, i did not leech anything. who cares if i have been a member for 5-8 years and posted under 10 posts? and yes most of us do (or at least i do) own a digital receiver to output DTS.

And "sharing" what you have found? You didn't share shit!

It would have been more helpful to actually say that you can batch tag mp4 files with something like MetaX which automatically gathers the info from the web (IMDB, Amazon, etc.)

And yes, it matters how much you post (ie. participate). In this case, active participation would have shown you to actually post your information/discovery, rather than merely alluding to it.

Ok I got it, sry. Now can we all just get along. People on the internet was having a hard time on muxing to mp4 correctly to play on this device for instance YAMB, it would mux the files but will not play on the WD TV, I have found that AVIDemux, meGUI w/mp4box would mux it and play on the unit. Now how I put the cover art on the mp4 is using Tag&Rename. This portion of the forum is the only forum that i have visited since i had purchased the device till today. Like I said sry to any of the Site Members that i may have offended. Piece out.

I had some problems with the firmware upgrade. My WD TV just didnt find the files from my USB disk. Then I found out that the filename extensions must be capital letters.

So when you have the files to the root of your USB disk make sure the files are named:
wdtv.VER
wdtv.BIN

I hope this helps.
