A few months ago I ran memtest 3.6 and Windows Memory Diagnostic on my Inspiron 531 (Vista Home Basic, 2 X 512MB and 2X 1Gb ram) and noticed errors. I tested each stick separately in slot 1 with Windows Memory diagnostic and got no errors. I had bought 2 new sticks (1Gb each) so I replaced the 2 512MB sticks for a total of 4 Gb. I don't remember if I tested them. When I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic I got no errors, but got errors with memtest 3.6. Is it because memtest is a more thorough program? I know that my OS is only 32 bit and only sees 3.5 Gb of Ram from what I've read in these forums. Does that have anything to do with it? Thanks for any replies.

The 32bit OS limitation should have nothing to do with it. I've always used: http://www.memtest.org/ which runs from a bootable CD and therefore eliminates the OS completely from the picture. Also, there appears to be a newer version of MemTest, which would seem to indicate they are still fixing bugs.
