  1. I downloaded some YouTube videos as MP4s recently via KeepVid. I assumed it would be easy to work with MP4s, but au contraire! I'm finding that nothing I have recognizes the videos!

ffmpeg, which seems to handle anything I throw at it, reports "I/O error - truncated and/or corrupted"
    TMpgEnc reports "unsupported"
    VirtualDubMod won't touch it

I have a bunch of codecs already installed... now I need an MP4 codec? From where? This format should not be called MP4 if it's just a glorified AVI container.

Try MediaInfo or Gspot and see what codec they are using and if you have it installed. AVI and MP4 are just container names that don't tell much of anything about the formats inside the containers. But you may just have some corrupted files.

You could also try playing one on VLC. It uses it's own codecs and can play damaged files most times.

Could mean they have not downloaded fully.

Try the new version of Virtualdub and install the input plugins that go with it. There is an MP4 plugin but it might conflict with the Quicktime plugin that is used to open MP4 files.

Install ffdshow with H264 support and configure to open H264 and AAC.

  5. Thanks all. I actually fed these files to ConvertXToDVD and it had no problem handling them... which is puzzling. Does it have its own codecs?

GSpot reports avc1/H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, Codec Status Undetermined
