  1. If the original item (DVD player, etc.) has ONLY a composite out ... is it worth getting one of those $179 scaler/converters to hook up to DVI or HDMI or component?

Will there be a difference? Better than the RF input? Being that the source is composite?

    Thank you.

  2. It would be cheaper to buy a new DVD player that has HDMI/Component Video Out. Costco has the Philips for $39 I think.

I would think the HDMI/Component output from a converter would look worse than the original composite input. For $179US you could purchase several low cost DVD players with HDMI or Component output.

Usually the best display quality is HDMI/DVI as it's a digital format, then analog Component, S-Video, Composite and lastly RF, though RF may be slightly better than composite, depending on the setup. Some displays also accept VGA, which is also analog. I would guess VGA may be close to Component quality or a bit better. A lot has to do with the conversion quality and the settings used. Since a computer and a DVD player are both digital devices, the digital signals are subject to less conversion losses. JMO.

Or look into the new Toshiba upscaling player which many people are raving about:
