As novice, I wonder about the following things:
1. Can I add srt files that normally are used for avi files to a dvd. If I can, must I synchronize them to fit the film?
2. Often the srt file fits a special realese, but is it possible, simply, to see whether the file fits and is synchronized to a dvd film?

1. If you use an authoring tool that supports the importing of srt files and converts them to subtitles. If you don't have one, then you may have to convert the srt file to a suitable format first, or add the subs after authoring.
