I am a movie burner and i use Nero for converting avi to dvd with menus and i use dvd rebuilder with CCE for compression. (I burn about 2-3 movies in one single-layer DVD-4.7GB so i need compression).
I burn the video_ts with Nero Burning ROM and after a few tries, i have two dvds having the same problem.
in one of the movies of the two dvds, certain parts of it are skipped. Before it begin skipping some parts, the video somewhat become distorted then skips about 20 seconds then shows after a few seconds it skips again. That happens between about 5-10 minutes then the movie will then again play smoothly.
What i meant by "Certain parts" is that when i play the same dvd again, it still skips the same parts, not random.
If you can't imagine what i mean,
I usually have 2 movies in one DVD. one movie plays smoothly and also the other one except some of its parts.
The movie with some 'skipping' is like this:
example, the movie is 120 mins long....
it plays smoothly the movie from 1-40 mins. then the video goes distorted and it skips about 20 seconds. so the Time now is: 40 mins and 20 seconds. it shows again smoothly a few seconds, then it skips again. that happens for about 5 mins. So the time now is about 46 mins already. then it plays the movie smoothly again.
That happens with my DVD player. If i play my DVD in the computer, everything plays smoothly.
What do you think is the problem here?
Well here are some basic infos on what i did:
Downloaded the movies and most of them are Xvid.
I open them with nero and make a menu. I set them as NTSC (i am from asia) and my audio is dolby digital(AC3).
I write the files into my hard disk.
after that, I open the video_ts folder created with DVD rebuilder.
I use CCE.
most of the settings are default. 2 VBR, one-click mode....etc.
I don't have 'Enable Bitrate Redistribution' coz i dun know what it does.
I click 'Backup DVD' and the result will then be burnt with Nero Burning ROM.
I use Verbatim blank dvds and maxell.
Can someone help me? thanks in advance!![]()

Sounds like the media you are burning with are causing the problem, also you shouldn't use nero to build the dvd cause you are encoding the files twice, just use cce to encode to dvd mpg and author with nero(dont let it re-encode the files) and buy a different brand of dvdr, make sure its a good type such Taiyo Yuden.

Downloaded AVI files are not the most ideal candidates for clean conversion
Nero is far from the ideal tool for converting AVI to DVD
Re-encoding with DVD Rebuilder to fit too much data on a disc will reduce the quality further
What brand of discs are you burning to ?
Can I suggest either of the following as being worth a try
1. Go and buy a DVD player that allows Divx/Xvid playback. You will be able to 6 - 7 movies to a disc without the need to re-encode. Burn the disc as data with Imgburn to good quality blank discs. Faster, easier and more reliable than your current process.
or
2. Use FAVC and set the resolution to SVCD or even VCD and add all your movies in one go. FAVC will makes sure that they all fit the first time, so you don't have to use DD Rebuilder on them and encode a second time. FAVC uses HCEnc, which is a far higher quality encoder than Nero. If you want fancier menus (and this is where FAVC falls down, IMO) then tick the box marked Keep Working Files, and the use the elementary streams in GUIForDVDAuthor to create your menus. Burn the results with Imgburn to good quality discs. By using a lower resolution you will get better value form the low bitrates, and a better overall image.Read my blog here.

i am using nero as avi to dvd because i want to have a good menu. and how could i use dvd rebuilder with cce to convert avi to dvd?
and if i'm not going to use downloaded avi files, where would i get the movies? that's the exact reason why i'm burning movies.
how could i also possibly use nero to author when i already have the movies in a video_ts folder?
i use nero for authoring because it's very simple to use.
i use maxell or verbatim blank dvds.
and anyway im not gonna have a dvd player with divx support...i don't have budget for it and my movies are gonna be borrowed by my cousins who also don't have divx support dvd players.
i actually use nero then use dvd rebuilder because i have about 2-3 movies in one DVD, dvd rebuilder serves as the compressor.
i have also done this 5 times already and i only have 2 of them which has one movie having some certain parts being skipped on my dvd player. but when i play it on my computer everything runs smoothly.
i have also another question, why is it bad to use nero from avi to dvd and compress it with dvd-rb with CCE, why is it bad to encode them twice? -
You dont use dvd rebuilder with cce,you use cce by itself to encode to the right file size and use nero to author the files after, you dont need to use dvd rebuilder to compress the files if you encode them to the right size first.

Re-encoding reduces picture quality due to data lost, the more you re-encode the same file the worse the picture quality gets. The movie skips cause of either the dvdr you burn with or the dvd player is too picky about playing burned dvds or both.

how can i author the encoded files with nero? redface.gif without encoding them again? redface.gif
is it automatic when the files are already encoded? will it only then transcode the menu? laugh.gif -

4. You are taking videos that have already been encoded at bitrates that are far too low (your downloaded source), blowing them up and encoding them at too low a bitrate for the resolution you are using, then re-encoding them for the third time (second by you) to an even lower bitrate to squeeze an absurd amount onto a single disc.
If you must put multiple movies on a disc, you should resize them down to a lower resolution so that the low bitrates do less damage, and whenever you are encoding you should be trying to encode to the right size first time. I suggested FAVC because it can encode your files to the right resolution, and at the right bitrate, first time. HCEnc, the encoder that it uses, is very good at low bitrates. All of this will give you the best quality image that you are likely to get given your targets. You can also do this manually with CCE, you will have to do your resizing and work out your bitrates etc yourself. And CCE isn't the best when bitrates get low. FAVC will take all the guess work out of it. You can use the working files created by FAVC to create menus in any good authoring tool. Nero is not a good authoring tool, and it will probably want to re-encode the videos, which is what you should be trying to avoid.
I find it amusing that you want to use Nero because you want good menus, but don't seem to care at all about the actual quality of the videos.Read my blog here.

i didn't know nero is that of low class.....
well, what can a dvd author do? use it when i already have the .vob files, right?
I will use FAVC to open the avi files and convert them to .vob. then i will use a dvd authoring software, am i right?
i am confused because you told me i could use FAVC while converting and click the "keep working files" when i still don't have the menu yet.
Or should it be that the dvd author can create a menu with the avi files? -
Creating a DVD happens in multiple stages. You don't just go from AVI to VOB. You encode the avi into video and audio files, then author it into VOBs. A program like Nero hides all this from you. So does FAVC, however if you tick the box marked Keep under Working Files on the front Tab. When FAVC finishes you can find the video and audio files in the location you set under Temporary Files Folder. Use these in GUIForDVDAuthor or some other authoring tool to create your menu.
Personally I rarely have to do this because I would only put one movie to a disc if I am authoring a DVD, and therefore don't worry about menus.Read my blog here.

ahhh...
so i am going to encode it with FAVC, then the video and audio files will be opened by dvd author. then after that will open the result of DVD author with FAVC again then i will tick Keep working files?
EDIT: oh wait, im confused....
i thought keep working files means that the MENU will be kept...so it means that the result will be working files, not .vob?
then i will open them with dvd author? -
Open FAVC, add your videos, tick Keep under Working Files. Click on the HCEnc Options Tab. Click Half-D1 (if the total running time is over 4 hours) or VCD (if the total running time is over 5.5 hours).Set the Quality to Best Click Generate DVD.
When FAVC finishes, go to the folder that the working files are in (set in FAVC), and you will find .AC3 (audio) and .m2v (video) files for each title (movie). use these when authoring.Read my blog here.

oh ok...thanks.
so the result of the dvd author will then be the one that will be burned?
thanks for all your help!
appreciate it much. ^_^
ill try all of these later.
EDIT: it seems i ran out of blank dvds now...
anyway im still open for some answers... -
anyway, i tried it, and i can see when i set it to VCD, the resolution would be lower. what if i set it to half-D1? or full?
what is DC precision? should it stay 8, not 9 or 10? -
Go and buy yourself a DVD RW and use that until you get a clean encode and burn. It will be cheaper than creating coasters.
As for resolution - it is all a trade off. You want to put a lot of data on a single disc. 2 - 3 movies means a long total running time. Your space is fixed - 4.38 gb. So the only way to fit this much data is to use a very low bitrate. The lower the bitrate, the less data you have for the image, and the lower the quality.
At this point you have three choices;
1. Decide you don't care about the quality, and go ahead at full D1, cramming too much data into the space
2. Decide you still must have2 - 3 movies on a disc, but reduce the resolution to allow for better image quality int he available space. Quality still won't be great, but it will usually be better than option 1. See my previous point for suggested thresholds for resolution changes.
3. Come to your senses and put one movie per disc, in which case this discussion is moot.Read my blog here.

1 movie per disc is ok, but what came into my mind is that it is much cheaper if i have more movies.
my method, which is using nero then using dvd rebuilder with CCE, produces something that is perfectly fine for me, only that, it has a problem, but not all results have this problem, which you said it is about the bitrate, which caused it.
thanks you so much. anyway, about the DC precision, is selecting 8 correct? -
I tried FAVC and used TMPGEnc DVD Author for menu then burned it with ImgBurn. It works perfectly and the quality is also good!
Thanks!
