    Hi!

I wanted to try reencode my WMV files to xVid because I heard lots of great things about the quality, compact size.

I tried reencoding the files by using TMPGEnc Express, with the standards settings for xVid. The only video settings that I changed is 1-pass and 2-pass, since I read that I must go through 1-pass in order to go through 2-pass if not there will be a StatsFile error.

Finally, the video was convereted. However when I tried viewing the video, my desktop keep flickering, and the video seems to be playing slowly as if the video was played using -0.5 speed.

Therefore, I will like to request for help from VideoHelp members, to help me.

    Thanks!

XviD and WMV3 offer about the same compression if similar settings & bitrate are used

In this scenario, converting from an already compressed source using a lossy codec won't increase the quality; all it will do is make your filesize larger at the same quality level

You want to use the original source if possible (e.g. blu-ray or at least DVD), then it might be better quality, smaller filesize depending on the settings used

Oh. But does that means that even reencoded in xvid will decrease the amount of pixel blocks?

Thanks a lot for helping me out in introducing me what programs and plugins to use. I will like to use whether, why does my converted video will causes my desktop to flicker? Is it because of the framerate of the converted video that causes my desktop to flicker? (I have no problems viewing other xvid encoded by others though.)

    Thanks!

  4. Everytime you re-encode something in xvid, it decreases the quality - the information is lost forever. That is why you want to encode only once from the original source (e.g. blu-ray or dvd, etc...)

I don't know what is causing your video to flicker. It might be the settings used during encoding, the software player or some filter issue, perhaps the wmv is drm protected... - you have not given enough information to diagnose what might be the cause.
