I was looking at my Add/Remove Programs on this Via Epia's HD (running XPsp3), because I'd partitioned the C: drive down to 10 gigs way back when. It was plenty for a boot drive until just lately...
now there isn't even room to defrag!

I was pretty bemused to discover Java of all things was closing in on a gigabyte all for itself.

    Java 6 Update 2 111 MB
    Java 6 Update 3 111 MB
    Java 6 Update 5 114 MB
    Java 6 Update 7 114 MB
Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 134 MB
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 118 MB

    Total 702 MB

what is the deal? I thought Java was just a helper app, not an OS in & of itself. Is there someway to check out what needs all this?

Sun's java doesn't remove previous versions
And is a favorite place from my experience for MALWARE to reside on your system.
Just delete everything but Java 6, you don't need the old versions
And if you don't use INTERNET EXPLORER, you don't need any of it as Firefox, Opera & Chrome have their own JAVA.
I hope someone apprises SUN of what a load of garbage they've put on our machines. Shame on you SUN

Make sure to turn updates off so sun doesn't bother you again

Yeah, the Java installs do NOT uninstall previous versions, which can sometimes also cause problems (in addition to taking up a LOT of space )

An interesting tool I've found, though, is JavaRa (http://raproducts.org/ ). Not only will it clean out/uninstall old Java installations for you, it'll do some cleanup of other Java-related files (including the Java cache), remove the new version checker on startup, among other things.
