    Hi All,

I am having trouble with my laptop when I use PRE7, I am happily working on a project and an error message pops up and the program crashes, very frustrating.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, Intel Core Duo CPU T7500 @2.20GHz, 2.19GHz 3.00GB of RAM, Windows XP with service pack 3, I'm not sure what sort or how big the video card is.

I hope that someone can suggest a reason why this program keeps dropping out..

    Thanks.

    And the error message says?
Does it happen with whatever video sources you have added?
Has it ever worked fine or?

The message is "Premier Elements has experienced a problem and has to shut down sorry for any inconvenience" then it shuts down. It seam to be with all footage types but last night it kept crashing with one file that I have had to convert using WMM so that PRE7 can use that file.

I had a few problems with one project that I just finished with constant crashes, I haven't had the program for very long..

Check out the PE support forum and see if others are having similar issues. They can probably guide you.

This is probably a good spot to say that laptops (with their single HDDs (no, external USB HDDs do not nearly count), integrated graphics, all sorts of little integrated mini-programs the manufacturer has thrown in that interfere with anything outside of Office keystrokes, substandard audio (the complete disappearance of audio line-in, except on some Acer models)) are NOT a preferable alternative to their desktop counterparts, even for an entry-level program like Premiere Elements.
I say this in the hope of countering the effects of pushy sales persons who offload laptops on newbies (some of who visit this site) insisting they are as fine a machine as any to put Elements in and edit away. NO, they're NOT.
If you have even a remotest plan to edit video, please DO GET a desktop, with a mandatory 2nd HDD in it. Then visit this site and take it from there.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

I like to see you pull a desktop around with you on production jobs.

I was talking about newbies and their seeming tendency to see their laptops as capable of anything they throw at it, NLE included.
I still DON'T have a laptop, and I DO go to productions. With many micro-size PC cases to choose from, I've built a rig that centers around a microATX board inside a 16" x 14" x 4" chassis that has two HDD inside, paired with a 17" LCD monitor. It's NOT difficult to lug around.
Hell, my setup is EVEN smaller than some fancy ultra-expensive notebooks that I've seen with 20" screens.

It all depends on how you plan and organize your project. No laptop is going to handle uncompressed HD with a multi-disk RAID and SDI I/O but a fast laptop can handle Cineform or Apple Intermediate Codec. Laptops lack adequate heat dissipation for serious encoding so you might encode your digital intermediates at home.

If you do need a RAID and SDI I/O a lunchbox Micro ATX might be workable. A quad core would certainly handle HDV and AVCHD better.
