I have some mpg's which apparently use vp6 for video encoding (according to GSpot), and which I can't play in anything other than VLC player, and even then cannot search, fast forward or rewind. I have installed the on2 vp6 codec, which didn't make any difference, I've also installed the latest version of ffdshow, which hasn't helped, despite enabling the vp6 filter. These files still don't play in wmp or media player classic, and are still not openable in virtualdub. I can't persuad ffmpeg to handle these files, even though vp6 is listed in -formats. MediaEncoder was going to transcode, but it was going to take longer than the duration of the video itself.
I'm not really media competent (though generally techie competent), and I can't work out how various players choose which codec to use. I've tried renaming the files .flv, to see if that will make a difference in codec choice, but it doesn't. GSpot reports that whilst the video is VP6, the audio is MPEG-1. Would this make a difference?
I should add that GSpot can't render either audio or video, even after codec installation. For some of them, it reports that directshow crashes whilst trying to render the video, and identified the codec as lmpgspl.ax, which reports itself as being from Ligos corporation - no idea. Not all of the videos cause this, and all still play in VLC.
Thanks

Thanks to all.
Although media player classic shouldn't need it, installing the splitter seemed to do the trick (I'd done everything else before I posted).
