    Nice post!

All high compression codecs get a major portion of their compression by not encoding parts of the image that don't change from frame to frame. Ie, "this frame is the same as the last one, just change this, this, and this...". When almost everything changes between frames the compression scheme breaks down and you get lots of macroblock articacts.

Don't lump QT with VP6, because "QT" - if you mean QuickTime - can encompass a variety of codecs, including h264/aac seen in the HQ Apple Movie Trailers (which is an "AVC Main" profile), or DV, Sorensen 3, h.263, etc... The quality can be good or bad depending on the source and/or codecs/settings used. The commonality is the the .mov wrapper (container). Not to sound cheesy, but "it's what's inside that counts"

If you drag the bottom slider (instead of pushing play) to preview the effects of the filter, it works. I can confirm pushing play does not work as you mentioned, for previewing - I guess the workaround is just to drag the bottom slider

If you drag the "AB" slider, you can see the effects of the filter(s) on partial frame (as seen in one of your screenshots)

Since you are comfortable with Pinnacle 9, did you consider upgrading to 12?
thanks poisondeathray - and for sticking with this newb / learningcurver,

have now heard from Sorenson who said on my set-up the crop + deinterlace boxes check themselves when the user seeks to modify a filter, so presumably adding a default-set filter doesn't trigger the box-checks ('ticks'=UK). they also explained that you cannot exactly watch a filtered preview but you can watch bits of it by using the I and O's on the keyboard, which i haven't tried yet; equally you seem to know of another method for previewing 'live' footage. Squeeze is obviously going to take a little longer for me to get my head round than i thought, it is not just another type of Pinnacle (lol)

already run Roxio Buzz on the vista, which works like a dream, the few times i have experimented with it. see no reason why i couldn't run Squeeze5 parallel with Roxio on the one desktop: capture and edit in Roxio, compress and filter in Squeeze - with the option to upgrade to Roxio Creator? (even though the Roxio trademark 'jingle' at the end of any video irritates me - perhaps this is less obtrusive on Creator?)

just hope i have enough time to experiment before my trial Squeeze runs out

yes, i've been poised to purchase Pinnacles 11 through to 12 for vista for months but the dreadful reviews have put me off -

    - recently i've come closer to purchasing Sony Vegas 9 Pro, but i am sticking with the Sorenson trial download for the time being, which might click?

    update

preview window in Sorenson Squeeze can be resized by dragging its borders - you can make it huge

this compression software with its filters continues to look promising

  7. have now spent 3-4 days testing out the trial Sorenson Squeeze 5 software, and finally understood how to apply individual Sorenson filters to video clips, and watch them (in Real and wmv formats - mpg4 compressed and played but would not show any image at all in Real Player)

Sorenson hosts a brilliant if not bewildering (to me) selection of file types, if you are heavily into web uploads; but i was primarily interested in the filters, for 'tidying up' particularly troublesome pieces of video, and the filters do not seem to be that much more versatile in that respect, than those on my old Pinnacle editware. the contrast filter, for example, was excellently balanced and gave me deep darks whilst not bleaching out highlights

once learnt, Squeeze is easy to use - basically a drag'n'drop workout, and will compress you a choice of more dv file formats and sizes than you dreamt possible; you can also crop with apparent ease and choose a range of frame formats - from 4:3 to anamorphic 'big screen'

support was excellent to begin with - including a product forum - but tailed off, including the forum, after about 48 hours, due to the weekend? there is an instructional dvd sold separately available at about $100, if you feel so inclined
