According to the manual you need to make a ICH8 driver disc from the mobo cd. I suppose you then install it. I did see that same ICH8 driver on ASUS's website for your mobo. You can then just disable the RAID after you've installed it.

  3. I had the same problem last month with my Asus p5ld2 deluxe board last month after re-installing xp pro. Anyhow, going off of memory, I believe you need to download the ACPI driver on Asus's website and install it. Then delete the item from the device manager and re-detect it.

  4. Thanks!

    OK, I downloaded:
ACPI driver for ATK 0110 virtual device version 1.0.13.6
and it recognised it just fine.

The dumb thing is that this driver was in the utils section, so overlooked it.

I also noticed in the Bios IDE configuration Menu, it has "Configure SATA As:" "IDE"
You can also choose RAID or AHCI
What is AHCI by the way and should I set SATA as AHCI instead of IDE?

    Thanks in adance.

  5. AHCI can sometimes be difficult to get working because the drivers are not naitively distributed on the Windows XP Install Disk and usually require you to make a special floppy with a driver. Try to enable it in the bios and reboot in to windows. If you get a Blue Screen then disable AHCI. There is a information on the ASUS website how to manually update the registry to get it functioning. I can't really give you a break down of which setup is better, but AHCI is supposed to have some performance gain.

ACHI adds hot-swapping and native command queuing to your SATA controller. You need to install it when you install the OS most times. You can do a registry mod to enable it if you already installed the OS. It just consists of changing one number in the registry, then selecting ACHI in BIOS, so not complicated.

    About ACHI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Host_Controller_Interface

A page from MS on how to modify the registry for ACHI: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976 (You will get a BSOD if you don't do this. )

But I haven't noticed any improvement in SATA performance. And with my computer, it adds about 5 seconds to the boot time as it identifies the drives. It does seem to work OK with optical SATA drives. This all with a on-board SATA controller. I don't know how well it works with a add-on SATA controller.

FYI if you ever use a SATA DVD burner you'll have to set SATA to IDE because the drive will not function correctly. Also you'll have to disable ACHI as well. This also affects JMicron chipsets as well when it comes to SATA DVD burners. But changes could have been made with newer model mobo's as far as compatibility for SATA DVD burners. I do know for sure that with the mobo's I have the ACHI is disabled in the mobo bios and SATA is set to IDE. Because it's the only way my SATA DVD burners will work correctly. Just my 2 cents!

  8. budz, the sata burner problem must have been fixxed. I am running a Sony Sata2 burner without any problem on an ASUS p5k-e Deluxe.

Good to hear that they actually fixed the JMicron chipset to work functionally with a SATA dvd burner. Because the first generation of JMicron chipsets didn't work. I never owned a mobo that used that chipset so it never was a problem for me. But for many it was a problem that could only be solved by using a PCI SATA Controller card with the Silicon Image Chipset 3112, 3114, & 3512.
