Good evening from a newbie to this site - I'm fairly useless when it comes this sort of problem, so please be kind!

I don't think my problem has been posted elsewhere, but please accept my apologies if I'm mistaken.

My JVC DR-MV5 DVD recorder takes DVD-R, -RW & DVD RAM discs & has always worked faultlessly. Suddenly, all the discs I’ve got return “Disc Error” when inserted - as do brand-new ones.

If I keep retrying (30-40 times), I’ll get one to be accepted eventually & can watch it, but trying to delete/edit/record/format gives “Unreadable Disc” or “Disc Not Recordable”.

I've had the case off & cleared any dust, but I'm unable to see how to get the DVD drive free - to be honest, even if I could, I wouldn't know from looking if there was anything wrong with it!

I look forward to any suggestions that might assist me & I thank you for your time & attention…[/u]

Maybe a bad drive. Are you able to playback regular commercial DVD's ??

I'd be inclined to check the spindle for dust/debris. The spindle is the part that holds the center of the discs when the disc is spinning. If it can't hold the disc firmly enough it slips and could cause your disc read problem.
If your unit reads commercially pressed discs but not home burnt discs that would point more to a laser problem.
