Here are my Virtualdub main program folder as well as the Plugins32 folder, I CAN view/play .mov clips but not .wmv and .flv clips . (I'm getting missing codec with .wmv, unsupported with .flv)

I read Baldrick's guide using avisynth and virtualdub, https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=284288 , installed wmv9VCMsetup.exe, but still no go.

I have the following in my sys:

    WMP 11
    KMPlayer
    VLC
    MPC Home Cinema

    VirtualDub
    Avidemux
    Avisynth

    Xvid-1.1.3-27042008
    Divx Pro Codec V 6.8.4.7
    qtlite270
    realalt190lite

I'm just getting into playing/editing with vid clips and really like Avidemux and VirtualDub a lot .

    Thanks in advance 8)

  3. Windows has two main video systems: DirectShow and the old and deprecated Video For Windows (VFW).

MPCHC and KMPlayer have thier own built in video decoders and will fall back on DirectShow if they find a file they can't decode (or if the internal decoders are disabled). VLC has it's own decoders but won't fall back on DirectShow. WMP uses DirectShow only.

VirtualDub needs VFW decoders for video. Ffdshow includes VFW decoders for many codecs but you may have to manually enable them. If ffdshow doesn't work for a particular codec you will have to find a VFW based decoder for it.

For FLV you need an FLV splitter. You may also need to enable ffdshow's VFW FLV1 and VP6F decoders.

Use GSpot or MediaInfo to determine what decoders you need.

Thanks jagabo, I got the .wmv part but .flv still no go .

    Here is what I did:
    1) Installed ffdshow r2210 2008-10-12 (Oct 10, 2008)
    - enabled/selected EVERYTHING

    2) Installed FLV splitter (FLVSplitter_20080127) and did the "regsvr32 c:\folder\FLVSPlitter.ax" and got a "successful" message

    3) Enabled all the ffdshow's VFW FLV1 and VP6, VP6F decoders

P/s, for ffdshow, do I take it that all media players will use their own codes first and if they can't find a suitable codec then they will make use of ffdshow's codecs? I'm asking this cause I always get the following error - ad31_appcompat.txt

    "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
    <DATABASE>
    <EXE NAME="mplayerc.exe" FILTER="GRABMI_FILTER_PRIVACY">
    <MATCHING_FILE NAME="mplayerc.exe" SIZE="6602240" CHECKSUM="0x848EACA9" BIN_FILE_VERSION="1.1.604.0" BIN_PRODUCT_VERSION="1.1.604.0"

or can I just install ffdshow's VFW part? (without selecting "decode the following using ffdshow?"

    Thanks again for your help.

  5. Are you using the FLV input driver in VirtualDub? Or the DirectShow input driver? If you are using the FLV input driver you shouldn't need the external FLV Splitter (I'm not sure how reliable this driver is though) but you will need VFW decoders. If you are using the DirectShow input driver you will need the external FLV Splitter and DirectShow decoders.

Many players have no codecs built in (eg, WMP) and rely on installed DirectShow codecs. Some have built in decoders for some codecs and will fall back on DirectShow if they don't have a specific codec. Some will only use their built in decoders and simply fail if they can't decode a video. I don't think any will fall back on VFW if the internal decoders and DirectShow fail.

What , I'm confused now......OK, let's try to make it simple for me 8) ,
1)I'll install ffdshow and do the "VFW FLV1 and VP6F decoders"
2)I have already done the (FLVSplitter_20080127) part and there is NO uninstaller for it.....
    3)What else must be done?

  7. FLV input driver for vdub. Place it in the vdub plugins (or plugins32) folder

FLV Input Plugin by Moitah, Version 1.1.0 (2008-05-07)
    http://www.moitah.net/download/latest/FLV_Input_Driver.zip

Also, not all kinds of "flv" can be opened, only some audio & video codecs.

Use mediainfo to determine what kind of flv you have

Bingo, thanks poisondeathray :P , much appreciated!

In the VirtualDub program folder there is a default "plugins" folder and as instructed by few of the plugins readme.xt, I'm supposed to create a "Plugins32" folder, are these two folders serving different purposes? (right now, I have all the plugins installed on both folders )

I've too many install/uninstall of media players, codec packs, codecs....short of formatting my HDD, is there anything available for me to perform a clean uninstall/remove all traces of codecs and do a fresh start?

    Thanks for all the help
