  1. Hey!
I'm new here, so I hope i'm doing everything right ^___^

I make fanvideos and i've been using Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 for a few months now, getting used to it and suchlike, but I can't seem to do this no matter how hard I play around with it.

I do my borders in Cookie Cutter, and I want to do a border that is wider than it is tall, like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfaZYN5K-Yk (I did not make this video).

But, my borders always come out square -_-.

Please can you help? I'd be ever so grateful
    Thanks!

That isn't done with the cookie cutter - that is done with a mask. Easy enough to do. Create a black graphic in photoshop/gimp/paint.net etc. 720 x 576 (PAL) or 720 x 480 (NTSC). Cut out the section you want to see through so that is is transparent. Save the result as a .png file to preserve the transparency. Place this on the timeline above your video and you will have your frame. The other advantage to this method is that you can create irregular frames with interesting edges.

  3. Ahh what a good idea, thanks!

Question though, what size should I make the rectangle? I have terrible sizing problems and it tends to be uneven and odd :\

The graphic size should be 720 x 576. The inner cutout can be whatever you want. You may need a couple of different ones depending on your source material. e.g. a 4:3 border with a 16:9 cutout. A 16:9 border with a 2.35 cutout etc.

    Try 720 x 576 with a cutout that is 680 x 382 and centred in the frame.

I know this is an old post but I am looking to do a similar task, what i would like to do is with the cookie cutter effect but instead of having the background a set colour i would like it to be transparent so i can use the video as an circular overlay with blurred edges

In the Cookie Cutter settings you have a choice of two methods. Cut Away Section removes the shape so you can see through it. Cut Away All But Section removes the borders around the section. Use the Feather setting to blur the edges of the cutaway.
