I currently have a 28" non widescreen beko CRT.

I would like to upgrade to a HDTV, here in the UK I have about £500/£600 to spend, so plasma isnt an option got to be lcd.

what is the equivalent size for a widescreen LCD? (im guessing 37") and what is the best make for my money? im not too worried if i can get 1080p or not as i dont have a blueray device, can't get sky or Virgin HD, can't get freesat HD. so nothing HD is going in really. (I have analogue cable, digital freeview, and satellite on hotbird 13E)
i do have a DVD recorder that does have the component out (my goodmans GHDD177DVDR).

    any help much appreciated

Just make sure the set you get has at least one hdmi input. Two is preferable. However you can get expander units for HDMI. Even if you don't have an hdmi source right now you will probably get one in the not too distant future.

That is my main bit of advice....

Size would be more a personal preference. In most instances it's more a matter of the amount of space you have for the TV and cost.

37" would have roughly the same height as your existing but wider (obviously) although may well look much bigger when you get it home and a 32" would be better suited. Best make for your money would be Sony, Pansonic, Samsung, LG in that order and then keep going down. Just because you currently don't have HD, don't discount it. If you can currently get Freeview you'll be able to get Freeview+ when that launches and you would need to live in a very deep hole to not be able to get Freesat (the fact you can get satellite from Hotbird means you would be able to get Freesat and Sky if you wanted them). You don't need Blueray to use HD either, upscaling DVD players are down to about 30 quid these days so it isn't worth not getting one when your existing one dies (which it probably will do fairly soon if it is the Goodmans).
