    I want to
    1. Edit my DV home video
    2. Add chapter marks
    3. Save in a format that I can easily view on a PC and a PS3 across my home network.
    4. I was planning to stream the video to PS3, e.g. using TVersity, but I do not know whether this will remove the chapter marker functionality.

I do not need a chapter menu, just the possibility to move forward/backward to the next chapter mark when playing the movie.

My understanding is that the PS3 is the limiting factor. I have read that the following formats support chapter markers and should be viewable on the PS3:
    - H.264/avc/mp4 (I might be mixing container and format here... ),
    - DivX (or XVid?),
    - WMV and
    - MPEG-2 (single file or only full DVD file structure?).

I have tried using Sony Vegas Studio 9, Pinnacle Studio 12 and MS Movie Maker (on Vista 64 Ultimate) to generate these formats. But the players, WMP and VLC have not been able to use any chapter marks on my PC. Then I assume that there are no chapters markers and have not tested this on my PS3.

I used Used Sony AVC on Vegas and MP4 on Pinnacle to generate avc/mp4.
MS Movie Maker was only tested with WMV and MPEG-2, no DivX or avc/mp4.
For MPEG-2 I only generated a file, not the DVD structure.

Anyone who has done this earlier? Or just some ideas?

You can add chapters to a mp4 using YAMB (mp4 is a container while h264/avc is the video format). But I don't think the PS3 supports it and I have no idea how well it works with software players, maybe vlc supports it.

You can also add chapters to a wmv using windows media file editor included in windows media encoder. But I guess it ONLY work in windows media player.

AVI Divx/Xvid and MPG files has no chapter support.
