  1. Hi everyone!

This may be an easy question, but it's never come up for me before. Can I watch a PAL dvd region 2,3,4,5,6 on my PC? What program should I use? I have Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Sonic CinePlayer and I think I also have Powerdvd. Is there anything special I have to do. And I'm not interested in converting it to NTSC if I can just watch it on my PC. Thanks!

You can watch a PAL DVD on your computer just fine. There is nothing special to do.

Computers are format agnostic if you just want to watch the video on your monitor.

You may have an issue with the region. Your DVD drive can change regions 5 times before it's locked, there's ways around that though and I'll let other more knowledgeable people fill you in.

Why do they do that with the region (only allow 5 changes)? Is that something Hollywood forced on them?

Pretty much, yeah. It was like early drives being speed limited when ripping to try to discourage copying. In most cases all this can be got around with a quick firmware update. If you don't want to risk that (small risk, but possible to trash a drive) then you can install DVD43 or pay for AnyDVD.

I like the term "format agnostic".
