Microsoft Photostory is pretty good, except that it's output is limited to WMV. Get the high quality papajohn output templates from his site and the quality is actually surprisingly good. Free from M$.

DVDSlideShowGUI is free, but takes more work to set up the show compared to photostory. Much wider range of effects and output types. I have never been able to get it to work, but others here have used it quite successfully.

You can also use Premiere, but you will have to do everything manually, which means learning about track motion. I do slideshows in Vegas regularly using this technique. Once you have done a few it takes no longer than the other methods.

The very best application is, unfortunately, not very cheap. It can only be justified if you plan to use it a lot, like I do.

  5. I would use a photo editor to put text next to the photo on a colored background.
Make sure you put the photo and text towards the center to account for overscan.
I did this in PhotoStudio and it only took one minute:

  7. Ulead CD & DVD PictureShow v4 is an excellent and easy-to-use software to turn photos to movies. You just drag and drop the photos and it automatically applies pan, zoom to each photo randomly. Of course you can adjust each photo if you like. I usually use PictureShow to produce a mpeg file and use Ulead DVD Workshop to add subtitles and burn to DVD.

Unfortunately, no update to both softwares have been done since Ulead was absorbed by Corel.
