In general setup of Shinco SDP-1280 I inadvertantly selected Chinese insteadof English as the OSD language. In trying to get back to English I seem to have frozen the system. It does not respond to remote (battery ok) or on board controls and dsplays only vertical lines on screen.

Is there a way to revert to factory settings so I can start the set up program again?

Try unplugging the player from the power outlet, and leaving it unplugged for a while (at least 30 minutes to an hour, all the way to one day). That might help reset the player.

Just curious - is that a new or relatively new player or is it some ancient player 5+ years old? I'm asking because Shinco abandoned the North American marketplace many years ago and I was just curious if they were even still in business elsewhere. In the earlier part of the decade companies like Shinco and Apex made some of the best DVD players because they could be made region free, supported such "exotic" (in North America at least) formats as VCD and SVCD and so on. Apex was at one time first or second in DVD players sold in the USA, but they've been out of business for years after their founder ran afoul of Chinese authorities in some tax dispute and got sent to jail (guess he didn't bribe the right people).

Shinco products still turn up regularly at the budget end of the market in Australia (where the OP is from), especially in the portable and auto market. Never bought one myself as the build quality always seemed, well, budget.

The Shinco was bought new in Singapore 2 days ago. It seems very good quality and has all the latest features. A google search showed that they build 2/3rds of all portable dvd players now available. Now if I could only restore those original factory settings!

The manual starts by telling you to press the SETUP key to access the main menu but the machine will not repond to input from the remote (battery is fine) or the onboard controls.

Thanks to those who tried to help. I sent the unit back to the vendor - the duty-free shop in T2 Singapore airport - who replaced it within a week at no charge. All works fine now.
