When I try screen capture wth Camstudio using DivX (latest version) I get error „CamStudio audio buffers still in queue“. On XviD its ok. Has anybody any ideas please?

It might depend on how you have DivX configured.

Actually, though, it probably isn't a good idea to capture straight to DivX/Xvid, as the system also has to compress while it's capturing, adding an extra performance hit. Capture using a lossless codec (of your choice), perhaps - but not the CamStudio codec... while it seemed to work okay for me, it was a pain trying to convert the resulting AVIs to a different codec. (Though, that was a couple years ago... I think support might be better for the codec, now. ffdshow supports it, I believe.)

I need the finished product to be playable by most normal windows setups (streaming). Maybe lossless codec and then flash-encode is the way to go? And thanks for the help

Sounds like a good idea, to me.

That way, you'll be compressing only once, from a decent lossless source. With DivX/Xvid, you would have been compressing twice - losing quality with each compression, as well, which can possibly cause visual problems with screen captures.

Using Snagit, I have to capture in Divx or I can't use the resulting captures since the only way that I can save the files is to copy the video and audio files from the temp folder and use Mpeg4Modifier to fix the header of the captured AVI. If I use Lagarith (it won't see the Huffy codec) then Mpeg4Modifier can not fix the file. This only happens with larger files. Smaller files will save just fine with any codec I try.

I'm tempted to use Camstudio to see if it captures any easier. Another reason that I like to capture in divx is because I don't have to compress twice using Virtualdub. I make what cuts I need and use smart render to create my finished file. I capture in 1080HD profile which gives pretty good results.

The swf encoder on CamStudio renders unusable quality. I've tried out both lossless codecs „CamStudio Lossless“ and „MSU ScreenCapureLossless“ on „Super“ which came up with unexplained errors and „Riva“ encoder which doesn't recognise input. Does any kind soul know of a combination pack that actually works without having to stay up half the night trying combinations?

Try a different lossless codec, like huffyuv. I warned against the CamStudio codec, but for different reasons.

Though I can't remember if CamStudio also offers the ability to capture in uncompressed AVI format...

I've installed version 2.1.1 of the huffyuv codec for use with CamStudio, but it doesn't recognize it. It doesn't show up in the available codecs in under the video options screen. Might I be missing something? Are their any other free solutions for capturing on-screen video?
