UPDATE: SOLVED... it had to do with a filter that was installed.... very sorry to be such a newbie at this.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and am having problems with Sony Vegas Pro v8.0.

We have a VHS tape that had lots of old 8mm videos from my grandfather transferred to it many years back. For the holidays I am trying to re-edit all that video and clean up what I can--a lot of it is overexposed, etc. I've digitized it all with a Dazzle Pro video capture device and am pretty happy with the resulting mpg. Now I have "trimmed" the video into about 200 segments in Sony Vegas Pro v8.0. I tried Premiere but just don't understand it. It also wasn't able to handle the type of mpg I have apparently.

Enough of the history... my problem is that some of the footage is in color. No matter what I try I cannot get the preview window to show me a color preview. I need this as I need to see the preview when I apply various FX's to clean up the video. Any suggestions? I thought it might be my laptop but this doesn't make sense. I also thought I might have applied an effect somewhere but I don't see any. To test, I imported a color video into a new project and it is also previewing in black in white. When I render it, it processes the color though.

Thanks very much for any advise/help you can give. I'm very happy to have found this forum and have already learned a great deal!

Can you tell me what filter was that caused the problem and did you fix it by uninstalling it? I too started using Vegas yesterday and I'm impressed with its interface but I like Studio 9 the best.

I had the red filter selected in the preview window. It is an option under the button that let's you overlay a grid or "safe regions".

I started to use Studio 9 at first until a friend advocated for Vegas. I selected Vegas thinking it would allow me more "restoration" options (that is what I really need). I figured Premiere would help me the most, but the learning curve is too great for this project.
