  1. I've heard a lot of people talk about the success they've had with using firewire and dv camcorders. That got me wondering are there any video devices outside of camcorders that can transfer video/data directly to a firewire connection?

For example do any high end TVs, PVRs or VCRs have firewire connections? Better yet are there any converters that takes a signal from maybe a composite, s-video or coaxial connection and convert it over to a firewire format? A converter like that could be a million dollar invention.

Not neccessarily a million dollars, but here a few devices that do what you talk about, from about $400 up to $7500(!)

Some of the newer D8 camcorders from Sony do conversion in both directions, so for the home user it's pretty much all-in-one.

  3. Canopus ADVC-100 DV/Analog Converter

There are several threads here discussing this device. It works in both directions. :P

  4. I saw a post somewhere ( I think on this forum) where someone used a camcorder, with the appropriate connections of course, as an adaptor (not through tape first) to record from a VCR through a firewire card. I think the software used was called Power VCR and it gave an mpeg as the captured file so you could go straight to VCD without going through avi which would be pointless given the low quality of VHS. Does anyone remember this and does anyone know the procedure in more detail.?? I would like to be able to do this as I don't have an analog capture card.

AFAIK DV Format is a fixed format (720x576 PAL or 720x480 NTSC) and you can only use full or half resolution. As "capturing" via Firewire is in reality a file transfer, you have to stick to the DV format for caturing (this is mpeg-2).If you want a lower resolution, you have to convert this format (always giving an .avi type) to a different format later.
