A CD player can randomly play the music. I think there may have two ways to randomly play the photos slideshow, either importing photos randomly while making photos slideshow (I understand it cannot be changed playing order after it was done) or playing it randomly. Which way is doable if I want to see the photos slideshow randomly assuming DVD player has no random play feature?

  2. Your first guess is a viable option.

  3. Long ago I was told there is in fact a random play feature available in some authoring programs, as I had a disk which I believed used such a feature.

Apparently this was available in the DVD spec but only a few hi-end authoring packages made it available. I have never personally confirmed this.

  4. There is a random play function build into DVD players. It could be used for this purpose. But it is such badly implemented on most DVD players, that it most times uses the same sequence each time you start the DVD...
(technically it is a random number generator which always starts with the same root).

Is there any software/tool can randomly import photos or the photos can be randomly rearranged after they have been imported, by the way?

Any PGC can be prescripted to follow one of the 3 playback modes:
sequential (default, used in most cases),
    random,
shuffle (randomly selected cells are not repeated).

For either random or shuffle mode the number of randomly played cells can be defined.
If you want to edit and existing DVD (e.g. with DVDRemake) keeping the natural playback order version, you can duplicate the main PGC (this keeps file size), make it a separate title (linked from menu) and edit its attributes (just check a couple of boxes in 'Extras' tab for PGC) for random playback.

Another (more complicated) way to organize random playback is using 'random' operator for seting a GP register to a value. I've seen this method used in Rolling Stones' 2006 tour box. There was a button in juke box page for playing selected tracks in random order.
Programming like this probably could be done while authoring in DVDLab, then it would be easier to make proper menu buttons for that option.
