    Hi!

I'm working with a photoshow (Proshow Gold) and want to include a videofile (short, say ca 2 min) from a DVD (a home video to which I have legal rights - Video_TS folder).

Having used VLC for a very long time as a media player I believe I can use VLC to extract the part from the DVD I want to include in my show. However, since Iīm a newbie in this field I donīt know how-to-do-it. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

You could use VLC, but it wouldn't be my first choice. The capture and transcode functions are more useful for damaged videos that are difficult to open with a regular video editor. VideoReDo or MPEG-VCR MPEG editors may be better choices. Or you could extract the MPEGs from the DVD with VOB2MPG or even use DVDShrink to cut out the parts you want.

What version of VLC are you using?

redwudz, thanks for your suggestion. Re using VLC for this - maybe Iīve been reading too many raving comments re VLC versality on Lifehacker.com.

Currently Iīm using version 0.8.6i although Iīve downloaded 0.9.2 but not installed it yet.

Since I know where (in minutes) the actual part is on the DVD it would be nice if you could specify from and to (e.g. in minutes) to extract the part Iīm interested in.

Since I already have DVD Shrink it would be nice if I could use that program. But I suppose need a video editor - any suggestions for a decent free editor?

AVIDemux could work for you, depending on what you want to edit. It can cut, trim, transcode and append video in a lot of formats, although it only cuts on I frames.

After a couple of hours with DVDShrink I was able to extract the part of the DVD that interested me.

By using DVDShrinks "Re Author" mode I was able to cut out the part that interested me, then "Backup" to a VOB file, renaming that file to a .mpg file, converting the .mpg file to a .wmv file (since ProShow Gold didnīt accept the .mpg file). Thatīs it!

Thanks to redwudz and olyteddy for your comments!
