    Hi,

I've just discovered ImgBurn & these forums have certainly cleared up many of the beginning problems that I've had!

But the issue at the moment is that the .avi movies that are being burnt on ImgBurn are all being cut down to 8 characters in the DVD player menu.

I believe 8 character limit applies to ISO9660 - the file system that's "old windows friendly" while the UDF is the DVD player friendly one. My settings under the OPTIONS tab on the right has the File System set to ISO 9660 + UDF - which I thought should make any burnt DVDs flexible on comps or players but using the characteristics specific to each file system.

Are there some sort of extra settings that I have to tick/untick or generally, what options should I change so that I'll be able to see the full title name on the DVD player and not worry about the computer getting confused either!?

    Cheers guys!

Sounds like your DVD player doesn't read the UDF directory for data discs. Try using ISO9660+Joliet mode, and/or go to ADVANCED / RESTRICTIONS and change the ISO9660 to Level 2 (31 Character names)

Some players, especially cheapies but also some branded ones, will only read the first 8 or so characters, regardless of how it is burned. If you put the disc in your PC, do you see the full file names ?

The thing is that when i've burned disks before (using Nero 8 - writing a couple of movies as a data disk) they appeared on the DVD menu exactly as they do on the computer - their regular file names.

I then had a couple of "Unexpected Format" errors and have tried ImgBurn, which was successful but first makes the filenames all CAPITALS and _underscores_ but also with the 8 character limit. I'm using Verbatims and don't think they're the crappy ones either.

There seems to be a daunting no. of options and tidbits that I can alter in ImgBurn, but I'm just after getting the filenames to appear as they do on the computer.

TJohns -> I'll give your method a go and report back.

Btw, I've got a Panasonic DMR-ES35V - one of those DVD/VHS combi things.

    See settings under
    Advanced/Restrictions
    ISO9660
    Folder/File name length

-- though if using ISO9660 + UDF, these restrictions should not apply.
You could try just UDF, should be readable on PCs with DVD burner drives at least.

I've made several coasters and here are my results:

    - Every time I used UDF mode on its own the DVD player chucked a spaz and said it was "unsupported" happened for CDs or DVDs I burnt. I thought UDF was the file system that ALL DVD players were supposed to understand?

    - ISO 9660 + Joliet mode was accepted however - no problems at all. I also changed some of the settings as AlanHK and TJohns suggested.

Everything is working as I wanted - with the full filenames being shown, so thanks guys for all your help.

Only question that's left: Why is the UDF system not recognised? Like I've already said, I thought this was the type for DVD players?!

UDF is the required format for *video* DVD's ... it's use for *data* disks isn't defined/required AFAIK

All bets are off for using UDF on data discs. UDF 1.02 is the version that DVD uses. If you use any other version of UDF, the DVD may not understand it. I have no idea what ImgBurn defaults to for ISO+UDF files, but it may not be 1.02. Anyway, as TJohns says, UDF may also simply be unsupported for data discs. For example, DVD players that play Divx/Xvid actually won't play EVERY stinkin' Xvid/Divx encode on the planet - there are many options that aren't supported at all. Similarly making data discs out of anything but ISO9660 just may not work. Finally do note that many DVD players simply have firmware that only reads the first 8 characters plus 3 for the extension. That's it. You can create ISO9660 files with longer file names using Joliet, but some DVD players simply can't handle it in firmware.
So this whole "problem" may simply be normal behavior by the DVD player.

    Yes it is.
You can choose other versions, but default is 1.02.
