Not a noob, but away from this for a long time.
I notice the supposed 0.0.9y version download reads as 0.0.9x. Correct?
There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of activity here. No update since January.
I've always liked this versatile tool. Is development dead? Is version 1.0 still under construction, or dead?![]()

Planning for version 1.0.0 of ffmpegX has begun.
ffmpegX 1.0.0 will be a total rewrite from scratch in ObjC, with a completely redesigned GUI. There will be many new features and surprises, and the application will become at the same time simpler to use and more powerful.
so why there is still no true update? Mencoder ffmpe and other binaries from the dead project site of mplayerosx are 2years old!!
I report a post from another one who thinks the same..
I notice that mplayer and ffmpeg have been updated a lot ‘recently’ (i.e. since early 2006) and e.g. the issue of ffmpeg's getting out of sync with DVB-T video seems to have been improved. Would it be sensible to update ffmpegX so that it conforms to the new command line options and can be used with newer ffmpeg/mplayer binaries? That would make a perfect 0.0.9z before the 1.0, wouldn't it?
I'm asking too if the development is dead...please we need to know.

Imp: thanks for mentioning the binary upgrades. I was wondering about those.
Some simplification through automatic disabling of incompatible functionality or parameters is badly needed in ffmpegX. I've tried several conversions recently with ffmpegX 0.0.9y. Some worked but many didn't, or the result wasn't usable.
The digital video world is such a horrid morass of codec variants with widely differing capabilities and compatibilities that just choosing the settings that sound like they'd give you the quality/compression trade-offs you'd like is very likely to create unplayable junk. For that matter, just deciphering what all the bits and pieces do is bewildering.
A fairly frequent occurrence is to have ffmpegX ding as if finished, almost immediately after starting, having created an empty file.
Anyhow, it's plain to see that it's all very complicated and coding this thing has got to be time consuming. Major has created an amazing "swiss-army-knife" video tool here and i'd really like to see it developed to be more usable by us basic clods.

some friends of mine on icq told me that is official that ffmpegx is dead....is this project really dead?
I can't believe it...please someone tell me this is not true..
MAJOR LAST VISIT IS IN FEBRUARY!!!

I've been waiting ages, hoping the new 1.0 rewrite would show up with some kind of brilliant interface.
I've yet to see any shareware video app where i thought the interface did much to clarify function, but i was sad to see the end of development on Visual Hub! It was looking promising.

I am with you guys, I loved FFMpegX and even bought it because I liked it so much but it has not been updated in ages. And it turns out Visual Hub is being discontinued too!
Is there any hope for a swiss army knife mac video converter? Anything we should all be moving to? Or is there still hope for FFMpegX?

I've gotten hooked on the newest versions of HandBrake. Great GUI. Excellent functionality and results.
But it doesn't solve the problem when i need something besides MPEG 4. Still looking for THE Mac video tool and not seeing anything very promising.

With VisualHub leaving the scene, there are few options left someone wanting a do-it-all program. VisualHub had a nicer interface and charged accordingly for it. Handbrake has evolved from a ripping program into a true video transcoder - if only for mp4.... but for those of us with PPC's, the support is not there. Sure, I have an intel mac in the house, but I'd be lucky to get it out of my wife's hands for a few minutes a day
There are obviously still a few bugs in 'y' and accordingly it's still in beta. I wish development would continue but I fear the future lies with single-function applications like Handbrake. It does a few things, and it does them well, but not as MANY things as ffmpegx.

To me ffmpegX was a one stop shop for video. Now too many of it's functions are outdated and i have a hard time getting it to create something usable.
Every new video manipulator app that comes along uses most of the same open-source libraries, but their UIs are too incomplete, only allowing access to a few of the features in combination. ffmpegX gets to a lot more features, but doesn't make it clear at all which are compatible with what. It needs a Handbrake sized window and that kind of clarity in the interface and it would be top dog again.

I won't argue that the face of ffmpegx is dated. When I started using it - like you - the wide range of features were unwieldy to the average user, but Major did a pretty good job of keeping up with requests and started adding multiple presets. Of course the requests grew and major's participation waned.
ffmpegx still has more features than I could ever think of using, but there are still many gremlins lingering from 2 or 3 versions ago. Perhaps we'll never see a 1.0

Just dropped by again to see if there was any new word about the fate of ffmpegX.
I need to convert an AVI (mpeg4+mp3) to something with a different soundtrack. ffmpegX seems like the right tool but i can rarely get it to do things as intended.
