Very interesting question. If your wav file already has a track dedicated to the timecode signal, I think it might be feasible. As in the videotape days, a stereo audio track would devote one channel to a mono soundtrack, while the other carried the SMPTE timecode. The problem lies in the compression to mp3, as there could be cross-talk between stereo channels. Also -- is there a timecode reader that will play mp3 files?

A little more info about what you're trying to accomplish would be helpful.

Ive wanting to record audio with a compact flash recorder. Then convert the WAV files into MP3's so they can be emailed to the UK. The mp3's will then be transcribed for use in a doco. They need to preserve the timecode to help the editor put together a rough cut with the director. apparently this kind of file conversion and process is becoming common practice in the UK so I thought it would help me if I got up to speed on it.

    Hi Soundie,

I see your question was asked a long time ago but can't tell if you ever resolved your problem. I too have the same question for the same reason. UK transcriber wants MP3 with timecode. I recorded audio in the field as WAV files with timecode but the TC is lost upon conversion to MP3.

Did you find a software solution?

    Thanks
