I was going my make a .mkv from a VC-1 video track and an AC3 audio track using mkvmerge.exe of MKVtoolnix, but it won't accept VC-1 video. Are there any other good software for doing this that accepts VC-1?

BTW, I also have an EAC3 (higher definition) version of the audio track, but is that even supported by PCs?

It should be possible to make an MKV container with VC-1 video as MKV supports just about anything for audio and video. I don't create MKV files so I have no suggestions, but perhaps another free tool will do the job.

I think by EAC3 you mean what is usually called DD+. There are various filters around that can play these on PCs, but I think all of the filters cost money and at this time what they actually do is either convert the audio to a slightly lower quality format or just play the AC3 core inside the DD+ file.

hmm, eac3to just minimizes itself and then freezes up when I try to load an input file in the video/audio tabs.

If you are using the GUI, you have to set the program paths on the 1st tab

    Alright, I've set the paths.

First I load the two eac3/vc1 source files and switch to mkvmerge tab where I then load the vc1 source file as input, enter an output name and click "add to batch listing" (just to test it without adding sound). I go to the batch tab and run it, but it just gives me an error log that says "Error: No input files were given. No output will be created."

Could someone please help me with this or link me to a tutorial or something?

  7. You can download a tutorial here

if you have more questions you can find the proper threads here (note the GUI doesn't support all the features as the command line, and hasn't been updated in awhile):

  8. alright i'm assuming you ripped this off of a hddvd. you should have two evob files or they could be called feature 1 and 2. open eac3to gui where it says source file load the first evob or feature file then under that there is a joining click browse and load the second evob or feature.now under destination erase the evob extension and put mkv like feature1joined.mkv.next click on the conversion options 2 check demux first video track and check strip vc-1 pulldown then click convert when it's done you should have your joined file and the audio will be demuxed seperately so when you browse to the folder you should have your video and 2 or3 audio tracks. now you should be able to play the video if you can't play the video then it will not convert. if it plays it will convert. now load it into xvid4psp there is a tutorial for this. as for the audio you have to convert it to ac3 for it to work. once the video is done load the video and audio file in mkvmerge and mux them together. if you were trying to demux with tsmuxergui it will not work. i have done it many times this way and it does work.

Sorry for not mentioning, but I got the vc1 & ac3 files by extracting them with TsMuxer from a recorded .TS, so I don't have any evobs.

  10. try loading the vc1 file in xvid4psp if you know how to use it it's pretty simple

It doesn't recognize the vc1 file when set to 'all media files,' but when I set it to 'all files' instead and open my vc1 it returns an error saying 'FFmpegSource: Video track is unseekable.' Same thing happens if I try to open the source .TS stream. I can play the .TS with VLC though and the HD video on it is perfectly viewable.

I've done that some months ago, and just for learning purposes,
but I do not recall all the "gory" details of the method. IIRC,
I used the DirectShow filter vc1esparser.dll plus Gabest's MatroskaMuxer
for putting an elementary VC-1 stream into an MKV file.
You'll need to know how to use GraphEdit, n.b. Anyway, I presume that
the latest version of Haali's MKV Muxer should be able to deal with a VC-1 .TS file.

Haali will just stand at 0.0% for hours with no progress being made if I feed it the .TS and start muxing.

I started using graphedit, unfortunately there ain't too many tutorials out there for it, but anyway, where can I get the vc1esparser.dll?

Apparently something on your PC has been screwed.
A general registry cleaning might fix that issue.

where can I get the vc1esparser.dll?
    Difficult method:

goto M$'s web site, find and download a certain SDK,
uncompress it with UniExtract, copy the damn dll, delete the
documentation files that you will not want to use.

    Easy method:

    Good luck!

Ok, so I've got the .dll, but how exactly do I open the vc1? Do I need to put the .dll somewhere or do i have to load it with graphedit somehow? (As I said, I'm a newbie with graphedit and I can't find any tutorials for the damn thing, so please help me.)

  16. Did eac3to not work for you?

The new version of mkvmerge should be able to handle "normal" raw vc1 properly. It might be that your raw vc1 input is different since it's from a .ts not a blu-ray/hd-dvd

    Step 1) Copy the file vc1esparser.dll into the "System32" directory;

Step 1) Run the following command:
    Code:
    regsvr32 vc1esparser.dll
Now you should be able to load "pure" .VC1 files in GraphEdit.
You can also view them with MPC or WMP, but the playback
probably will not be very "correct".

All you need to do is use VC12AVI before muxing to Matroska with MKVMerge. Basically, this program will write the necessary information about the raw stream into the AVI container which can then be opened directly by MKVMerge. No transcoding or recompression takes place.

When I run the regsvr32 I get an error message saying:
"The module 'vc1esparser.dll' may not be compatible with the version of Windows that you're running. Check if the module is compatible with an x86 or x64 version of regsvr32.exe"

I'm using Vista 64, so should I put the .dll somewhere else like SysWOW64 or maybe use another command?

Vista 64, huh? That would explain a lot of things.

In this case, you'd better give a try to Inspector.Gadget's suggestion.

Hmm, this is wierd, when I use VLC media player to view the 2gb large output .avi they are like really jerky in their playback, as if the picture was shaking back and forth or something (can upload a sample if you need one), but when I then use WMP 11 instead, they are perfectly fine. I'll use them with mkvmerge and see what the final .mkv will be like.

btw, is there any way to make vc12avi just give me one big 15.6gb .avi instead of 2gb segments?

@mkvbob - You might ask Crypto over at Doom9 (he's the guy behind DVBPortal and all its software projects). I've only used VC12AVI once and wasn't aware of the splitting behavior. Might it be encountering discontinuities in the stream? In any case, if the stream is OK and the final AVI is just split correctly, you should be able to append either the AVIs or MKV segments with MKVMerge. Crypto would know better; here is the discussion thread for the tool: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=128943.

Edit: Apparently the tool splits files into 2GB pieces, but I think you can append these using MKVMergeGUI before muxing. I don't have a convenient >2GB VC-1 file with which to test.

I did append em and created a .mkv, but the video is still all twitchy when played in VLC and I can't play .mkv in WMP.
