  1. Hi,

Is there a codec for H264 and xvid for Virtualdub? I'm currently in the process of adding a subtitle to the video and Virtualdub can't accept it since it requires a codec for them.

    Thanks!

  4. It sounds to me like the OP is looking for an h.264 decoder (x264 is only an encoder). Try ffdshow, enable the VFW h.264 decoder.

"x264vfw is the VfW (Video for Windows) version of well know x264 encoder + ffh264 decoder (from ffmpeg project)."

The above is from the link I provided earlier. Not that I pretend to be an expert when it comes to x264vfw.

Of course I agree that ffdshow is a must as well

  6. Ah, didn't notice that your link also included a decoder.

So I've installed the "x264vfw + ffh264 decoder" but I still can not open H264 files in Virtualdub but I did notice that there's an option to select x264vfw codec in the "compression" menu.

On another thread I read about a "directshow plugin for Virtualdub" which can be found here http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/DShowInputD...tDriver-0.4.zip
I got this and got a little further trying to open H264 files in Virtualdub. Now I get an error saying that the file "does not have a video stream". I know the files have video (and audio) content as I can play them in Windows Media Player which utilises the "DivX H.264 and AAC decoders". Any suggestions as to what I can do next to open H264 files in Virtualdub?

How do I know if the "ffh264 decoder" is working? How do I choose this decoder over the DivX H.264 decoder?

    bigfb,
I have a similar problem opening some files in VirtualDub. With the same message. The files also will not open in KMP player, but will open and play in VLC player. Apparently there is some codec missing in ffdshow that is internal to VLC. TIA to anyone out there that has a suggestion. Also any good pointers as to how to add codecs to the ffdshow list. I've looked but haven't been able to find and pointers as to how to accomplish this. And yes I have enabled all the H264 codecs in ffdshow.

    Again TIA

I think the problem in opening the H264 files was the audio which was encoded in AAC. I used "MP4Cam2AVI" which could convert the AAC audio to MP3 but could not convert the H264 video to XVID. So the new file was a H264 file with MP3 audio. Virtualdub would then open this new file using the "directshow input driver" option. I could then re-encode the video as I wanted.

  11. Try DirectShow plugin and in the open video file... select file type DirectShow input plugin.
The source of the plugin: http://www.virtualdub.org/beta/DShowInputDriver-0.5.zip
