Backing up an HDR-SR12 (HDD 120 gig)

I am trying to find a backup device (like an external HD) that will allow one touch backup of the contents of my Sony HDD camera.

There are some tools out there that *seem* like they do this, including USB bridges that claim to help copy from one USB device to another, but i am a little frustrated with the lack of bigger companies promoting this type of device.

Are there any suggestions for this type of backup? I am trying to remove the laptop requirement while my team is in the field.

If the camcorder can be setup to appear as an external hard drive when you connect it to your PC, just look for USB external case with OTG (on the go) support.

Aren't there any mainstream companies making this type of thing? It's killing me that they are all half ass has been companies. Most devices like this don't even have the company or website available... just gotta find it at some distributor.

We need a Seagate or other USB HD vendor to jump on this.

Look up maxtor one-touch, there's several models. Seagate bought Maxtor a while ago, there might be even some Seagate branded models.

The problem with working in the field is access to power supply.

2.5 inch enclosures with usb 2.0 can often be powered by a laptop thru the usb 2.0 connection only (no DC connection) but sometimes not (it depends on the connection, some work, some don't provide enough "juice" even though it's usb 2.0 compliant). I have no idea if the SR12 can provide enough thru it's usb port, or if the firmware can even "see" the SR12 hard drive properly as if it were a PC/laptop formatted hard drive.

Seagate is an HD manufacturer not an external case maker. They probably have their cases made by one of those Taiwanese/Chinese companies. At any rate Bytecc cases don't come with a HD, it's up to you to put the one you like in.

Well - Seagate makes a lot of things (whether its their partners producing it i am not sure). For example, DAVE is a new technology that seems like it might offer some opportunity.'

Anyway, as for the other post, How would i use Maxtor 1 touch for this? Don't you have to set this up on a PC first? I am looking for USB On-The-Go enabled devices i guess...

Wow... its amazing. These 2 links do what i want, but i am looking for a company that seems like its still in business or is at least reputable / currently developing and enhancing the product.

Is the OTG specification dead or something? Even the manufacturers who were producing these in 2004 don't seem to have any info on the spec on their sites (like Welland).

Problem with those devices is that the Chinese manufacturer only sells them to distributors who then pass them on to stores then to you. It seems the North American distributor of the Rapsody called it quits, but they still seem to be supported in Europe.

It seems the function has been under promoted, stores preferred pushing more expansive photobank type devices instead.
