I just bought a 50-pack of DVD-R blanks online and they arrived today. What I MEANT to buy was DVD+R blanks. All my equipment is relatively new, including my PC burners. I will be using the blanks for both DVD video and data backup.
Is there any good reason why I should consider returning the blanks in exchange for the +R variety instead? Does it matter anymore (if it ever did)?

These days it would really only matter if your burner did not handle -Rs.
