  1. Record companies are scrambling to find new ways to distribute music in the face of declining music sales. The latest is slotMusic, a microSD card containing music in MP3 format without DRM (digital rights management), playable on pocket devices such as mobile phones.

EMI Music, Sony BMG, Universal Music, and Warner Music have joined forces with memory card maker SanDisk, which is developing the technology behind slotMusic.

The cards will hold 1G byte of data and will ship with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) adapter so that users can add their own content using a PC.

    For more see : http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/151332/sandisk_and_record_companies_laun...ith_music.html

The record companies will offer extras including liner notes, album art, videos, and "other creative content. SlotMusic cards will first be available at brick-and-mortar and online stores throughout the U.S., including Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

Will movies next to be on Flash Memory Chip ?

Is this basically the same as MJA posted here: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic356935.html ?

Hrm. If I could get decent video quality (well, you KNOW what I mean) on any of the phones I've used, I'd... well, I'd be a little happier.

SingSing, there are sd cards with movies already on Asian market.
I haven't bought any (and I didnt see microSD, I think they were all the standard SD cards) but I still have some Hong Kong video guide they gave out for free in a hotel 2 years ago. It is butchered to 320x240 ipodish crap format on a 512MB card, was wrapped in a beautiful fold-out city map and came in a plastic cover better designed than some expensive DVDs in America - for free LOL

Who needs another "slotcard" or whatever.
Those studio execs are really idiots living some fantasy live in the last century I think.
If they would just sell new-ish movies for $3.99 in a crappiest ipod format online (or for a buck more on those 256 MB cards that are in garbage bins of the computer junk stores - 5 for $1 last time I saw them) and they'll sell millions of them.

Seems like a very creative initiative by SanDisk to sell memory cards but I am not sure who is going to buy. I don't think consumers are looking for another format...just companies trying to combat Itunes, Amazon and the like. I won't be buying...that's for sure!

Our local library now has audio books in tiny self-contained players that use memory cards. Just plug in some headphones or a powered speaker. They also have a battery, volume and FF, Pause, etc., controls. It appears to be MP3 format. This is a good use for the smaller memory cards.

If the movie industry would remove their 'death grip' on distribution, cards could very well replace DVDs for movie playback in the future. The rental places could recycle the cards and burn new videos to them, so less cost on shipping and materials, and less cost for distribution. Of course they would want to create a proprietary player that would be difficult to hack.

Library is a great place to catch up on older movies on DVDs.

Any proprietary audio player still have to output the sound to the headphones, thus any portable recorder with external audio-in can record it (probably even dumbest iPod owner could do it)

Yes, that'll be beautiful, but it'll never happen.
If they decide to move to any other format, it will be a completely different shape/dimensions flash memory "package", something completely unfit for any current SD card readers, and on top of that - most likely - half of its space will be occupied by an internal "guarding dog software" encrypting/decrypting the content with some 4096-bit monstruus encryption, and connectable with the selected choice of future SuperHDMI-with-QuadrupleSecurity TV sets or such

In case you haven't noticed, movies in USA became such Top Secret national security stuff that any CIA/FBI/HS documents pale in comparison...

The code that is not breakable is "one-time-code". That has been king of hill since WWII.

I'm more interested in these "digital copies" that are being issued on dvds and bluray. I like the idea of having an official transferrable copy on the disc. As long as they are compatible with my ZUNE I'll be happy with it. I'd like it to be common on BLURAY so I could buy a bluray copy without having to worry about how to transfer it to my portable player.... So long as the quality was comparable to a home transfer from an existing dvd copy mind you....
